Electromagnetic superconductivity of vacuum induced by strong magnetic field: numerical evidence in lattice gauge theory

    Get PDF
Using numerical simulations of quenched SU(2) gauge theory we demonstrate that an external magnetic field leads to spontaneous generation of quark condensates with quantum numbers of electrically charged rho mesons if the strength of the magnetic field exceeds the critical value eBc = 0.927(77) GeV^2 or Bc =(1.56 \pm 0.13) 10^{16} Tesla. The condensation of the charged rho mesons in strong magnetic field is a key feature of the magnetic-field-induced electromagnetic superconductivity of the vacuum.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, elsarticle style; continuum limit is analyzed, best fit parameters are presented in Table 2, published versio

Emergence of Macro Spatial Structures in Dissipative Cellular Automata

This paper describes the peculiar behavior observed in a class of cellular automata that we have defined as dissipative, i.e., cellular automata that are open and makes it possible for the environment to influence their evolution. Peculiar in the dynamic evolution of this class of cellular automata is that stable macro-level spatial structures emerge from local interactions among cells, a behavior that does not emerge when the cellular automaton is closed, i.e., when the state of a cell is not influenced by the external world. Moreover, we observed that Dissipative Cellular Automata (DCA) exhibit a behavior very similar to that of dissipative structures, as macro-level spatial structures emerge as soon as the external perturbation exceeds a threshold value and it stays below the "turbulence" limit. Finally, we discuss possible relations of the performed experiments with the area of open distributed computing, and in particular of agent-based distributed computing

Fast simulation of crowd collision avoidance

Real-time large-scale crowd simulations with realistic behavior, are important for many application areas. On CPUs, the ORCA pedestrian steering model is often used for agent-based pedestrian simulations. This paper introduces a technique for running the ORCA pedestrian steering model on the GPU. Performance improvements of up to 30 times greater than a multi-core CPU model are demonstrated. This improvement is achieved through a specialized linear program solver on the GPU and spatial partitioning of information sharing. This allows over 100,000 people to be simulated in real time (60 frames per second)

    Asynchronous cellular automata

This text has been proposed for the Encyclopedia of Complexity and Systems Science edited by Springer Nature and should appear in 2018.International audienceThis text is intended as an introduction to the topic of asynchronous cellular automata. We start from the simple example of the Game of Life and examine what happens to this model when it is made asynchronous (Sec. 1). We then formulate our definitions and objectives to give a mathematical description of our topic (Sec. 2). Our journey starts with the examination of the shift rule with fully asynchronous updating and from this simple example, we will progressively explore more and more rules and gain insights on the behaviour of the simplest rules (Sec. 3). As we will meet some obstacles in having a full analytical description of the asynchronous behaviour of these rules, we will turn our attention to the descriptions offered by statistical physics, and more specifically to the phase transition phenomena that occur in a wide range of rules (Sec. 4). To finish this journey, we will discuss the various problems linked to the question of asynchrony (Sec. 5) and present some openings for the readers who wish to go further (Sec. 6)
